Abhikshan Shiksha Kendra, an initiative of Rahara Abhikshan is not a school. It is not a non-formal school, either. It is a comprehensive development centre for the first generation learner. We stress on behavioural change, cognitive and cultural development. We strive to sensitize an economically challenged budding generation to a variety of issues.

In the year 2007,we have started Abhikshan Shiksha Kendra - a composite centre for the under priviledged students residing along the railway track between Khardah and Sodepur railway stations. The primary objective behind the venture is to develop a keen interest in education.

We started our Shiksha Kendra with 10 children and gradually increased every year. At present 70 students from class I to class X participate regularly from 2:30 to 8:30pm in our Shiksha Kendra after their formal school time.

Till today more than 300 children have been trainned in our centre.

Background of the Children:

Most of these children come from poor families.Their fathers are engaged in manual jobs as rickshaw pullers, van pullers, daily labourers and vegetable vendors in the local markets.Their mothers are mostly maidservants, vegetable vendors, some are home makers. In spite of a low family income, many of these fathers are alcoholics, some even engage in gambling. Inevitably, such a life style leads to domestic violence, which in most cases has a severe impact on the young mind.In such a situation, the entire responsibility of bringing up the child falls on the mother. An unfortunate consequence of this is that education and health care are low in the priority list, as arranging for a single square meal every day emerges as the biggest challenge in their lives.

What We Do:

We counsel the parents to a large extent. We convince them the need of educating their children for a better tomorrow. We aspire to make learning fun.Our teaching techniques include drawing, dancing and singing lessons, general knowledge, quizzes and stage plays besides class room teaching. We try to provide a window to the realms of creativity and knowledge that the not–so-privileged seldom have access to.

We celebrate Rabindra Jayanti, World Environment Day and Children’s Day etc with them every year where they have to perform before the community members.

We provide them books, exercise books, pen pencil and eraser etc and small refreshment.

We have opened a savings bank in our centre where students can open account by Rs 2/- and can deposit any amount above rupee one. We are trying to develop saving habit and a basic knowledge of banking among them.

Beside education, they are being trained in Dance,Painting and other cultural courses in our composite centre.

We organized a four-day computer workshop, which provided the first-ever interaction with a computer for the children.Understandably, the initiative was a huge success.

Of Late,we started COMPUTER LITERACY programme arranging Computer trainning and Workshop regularly.

This has become a highly sucessful programme to provide a basic knowledge of computers to all students enrolled on our centre.

From 2015, Abhikshan siksha kendra started computer classes for the school students stiudents of different streams, home makers and others. It is offering the Computer Basics and Fundamentals of computer, Computer Applications and different languages.
